Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This study examines Finnish comprehensive school principals' conceptions of diversity and diversity leadership, offering insights relevant to global educational challenges. Using mixed methods, including a nationwide survey and in-depth interviews, the research investigates how principals understand and navigate diversity in practice. Findings reveal a gap between ideological recognition and practical implementation of diversity leadership, with principals focusing on visible aspects and pragmatic management. The study highlights the need for enhanced diversity leadership competencies, critical self-reflection, and institutional change to create more inclusive educational environments. As many countries grapple with increasing student diversity, Finland's rapid demographic shift and renowned education system provide a unique case study. The findings have implications for principal training, school leadership practices, and educational policies internationally.
