Abstract

AI-enhanced technologies, from household appliances to advanced medical diagnostics, are becoming ubiquitous. Despite their prevalence, non-experts often struggle with AI due to misconceptions, leading to unnecessary fears, misuse, or underutilization. Misconceptions are linked to a lack of understanding of AI across all ages and professions. Addressing this gap, our misconception-driven curriculum derives from common misconceptions to teach AI literacy effectively. We conducted a scoping review of studies on non-technical individuals' AI perceptions, using systematic searches, citation chaining, and citation tracking. Our findings reveal five key themes of misconceptions. We propose a curriculum addressing these themes to enhance AI literacy and ensure safe, ethical AI interaction.
