Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is precipitating a profound transformation of workplaces into digital and automated environments, thus heightening the demand for AI competencies. To understand how the national policies across the globe designed to cultivate AI competencies, this study analyzes 50 countries’ National AI Strategies (NAISs) to delineate policy priorities, strategies, and investments for enhancing their workforces’ AI competencies. Our analysis identifies only 13 countries exhibit high-level prioritization to developing workforce’s AI competencies with detailed measures, which are primarily developed economies, particularly located in Europe. We identified six categories of strategies and four types of investments to develop AI competencies. While most countries highlight financial support to promote AI competence development in higher education, more attention is needed for underrepresented populations.
