Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 104

Abstract

Black youth confront challenges from systemic racism, discrimination, and limited access to culturally relevant services, affecting their emotional well-being and civic engagement. This research project examines Catharsis, a program offered by non-profit organization Generation Chosen, which supports Black youth's mental health and emotional intelligence. Data collected between December 2022 and April 2023 through surveys and focus groups included 55 participants aged 15-20 in Toronto’s Jane and Finch community. Using Critical Race Theory, the study highlights the significance of trauma-informed, culturally reflective programming. Findings reveal improvements in coping mechanisms, life skills, and mental health through connections with providers sharing similar experiences, emphasizing the need for such programs in Canada.
