Bridging Cultures: Translating With Culturally Responsive Methodology

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the intricate interplay between translation and culturally responsive methodology in qualitative research. We propose to view (and practice) translation through a culturally responsive framework, focusing on three levels: socio-cultural and structural, interpersonal and relational, and research practices. At the structural level, we critique the predominant practice of translating non-English research into English, highlighting how it often overlooks cultural subtleties and perpetuates linguistic imperialism. On the interpersonal level, we emphasize the visibility of translators, translation practices, and the power dynamics involved in cross-cultural research. At the research practices level, we zoom in and exemplify how translation is influenced by theoretical frameworks, contexts, audiences, and is never neutral.
