Black Identity Among Undergraduate STEM Students in the Mid-Atlantic Region: A Systematic Literature Review

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

The primary objective of this systematic literature review was to identify empirically-supported items (e.g. books, articles, thesis, news, law briefings) relevant to Black/African American undergraduate STEM majors in the MidAtlantic region (i.e. Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware). This manuscript serves as foundational literature for a grant-funded mixed methods study focusing on the examination of Black representation across undergraduate STEM disciplines within the Washington Metropolitan area. Further, this systematic literature review provides a socio-historical contextual background that informs future STEM research in this region. The intention is to consolidate the thematic conclusions derived from this review into a manuscript slated for publication.
