Experiences of Awe Contribute to Learning, Motivation, and Purpose at Work

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 402

Abstract

This study investigates the nature and impact of awe experiences in the workplace. Through an online survey of 100 United States workers across many sectors, we identify several common elicitors of awe, including observing the abilities and virtues of colleagues as well as the perceived meaningfulness of one’s work. Our findings reveal that awe often leads to new understandings, increased intrinsic motivation, and a sense of purpose or affirmation in one’s career choices. The study expands on prior research on awe at work (which has been largely focused on STEM professionals), supports existing evidence for the power of personal relationships to elicit awe, and highlights the value of seeing awe experiences as potential “a-ha moments” in the workplace.
