Abstract

Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represent 12% of the special education population in the USA. The COVID-19 pandemic and shift to online schooling posed significant challenges for these students and their families. This study investigates the challenges and benefits experienced by parents of school-aged children with ASD during this period. An online survey was completed by 119 parents of students with ASD, utilizing mix method approach. Over half (54%) of parents were dissatisfied with online schooling. Online instruction was seen as a useful supplement to in-person education. The study provides insights into the challenges and benefits of online education for students with ASD and offers recommendations for future practices.
