Turning Mistakes Into Mastery: Lessons From Feedback Failures in ECEC-Quality Development

Sun, April 27, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

While the system of professional counseling plays a key role in ECEC-quality development, not much is known about counseling processes (Meier Magistretti, Topalidou, & Meinecke, 2019). Following on from the theory of negative knowledge (Oser & Spychiger, 2005), it has been possible to identify pitfalls in professional counseling, namely those behaviors that lead to defensiveness or resistance on the part of ECEC-teachers and thus prevent quality development. Narrative interviews (N=23) were conducted and evaluated using content analysis (Mayring, 2015). The results show two main tendencies in the advisors' behavior, which can be described as deficit, non-enabling counseling strategies: “Directive counseling behavior” and “avoidant counseling behavior”. The article concludes with a discussion on how to learn from mistakes in feedback discussions.
