Black Students Navigating a Predominantly White Campus: A Critical Spatial Approach

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3E

Abstract

Race and space are intricately tied yet this relationship is under-examined in higher education research. This qualitative study of 29 Black undergraduate students explores how campus spaces are racialized and how such racialized spaces shape Black students’ experiences on a predominantly White campus. Using critical spatial frameworks the authors demonstrate how Black students navigate the university’s built and felt geographies.
