Students’ Reported Costs in Chemistry, Statistics, and English: Examining Course, Time, and Gender Differences (Poster 25)

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

We examined students' open-ended reports of costs at the beginning and end of the semester in college chemistry, statistics, and English. Specifically, we examined the frequency of how often costs were reported in student responses and how those reports differed between courses, over time, and between men and women. The most frequently reported cost was task effort cost across all courses. Emotional cost was reported more frequently at baseline than at final across all three courses. Women more frequently reported loss of valued alternatives cost and emotional cost than men at baseline in chemistry and men reported more task effort cost than women at baseline in English. Together, our findings contribute to the ongoing development of the cost literature.
