Abstract

As mixed methods-grounded theory (MM-GT) gains more traction, this paper explores the concept of integration when combining MM and GT to develop/advance theory. By providing an illustrative case of MM-GT that attempts integration in an equal status study, this paper revisits the “contentious relationship between epistemology and methods” and offers insights on the challenges and remedies of integration toward complementarity. Although the discomfort of merging findings that fail to perfectly align can be unsettling, I argue there is value in bringing together two sets of seemingly disjointed findings via an MM-GT model, shedding light on processes (narratives) and illuminating mechanisms (mediating/moderating factors) toward a deeper understanding of old educational problems in new ways.
