Power, Privacy, and Transparency: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Ethics and Communicating Learning Analytics

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 711

Abstract

This study examines the multifaceted nature of power regarding learner data privacy and the ethical implications of learning analytics. Through critical discourse analysis, we investigate how strategic ambiguity in communication allows institutions to manage uncertainty and maintain control over data practices, potentially at the expense of transparency and ethical conduct. Findings reveal that administrators employ strategic ambiguity to navigate technological uncertainties, complicating ethics regarding data collection and usage. Data analysts, often complicit and disempowered, echo ambiguity, while students demonstrate low awareness, limiting their ability to advocate for informed data practices. We conclude that transparent communication about learner data practices—including collection, intended use, and governance- is necessary to uphold ethical standards in learning analytics.
