Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3G

Abstract

Objectives
This presentation explores how technological advancements can be leveraged to decolonize the world language classroom. It addresses colonial narratives in language curricula and meeting students’ unique needs. Drawing on social justice education and culturally responsive pedagogy, this work challenges dominant narratives and power structures in language teaching. This presentation emphasizes the importance of an inclusive, equitable learning environment that values the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of all students.

Methods
The presentation provides an overview of technological advancements and current efforts to decolonize world language education. This includes a historical perspective on technology in language learning and an examination of contemporary tools and practices. Understanding the evolution of these technologies helps educators better advocate for decolonization. The presentation highlights how technology can personalize learning experiences, making education more relevant and engaging for diverse students.

Findings
A key strategy for integrating technology in support of decolonizing efforts is facilitating access to diverse voices and authentic materials. Technology enables educators to bring various perspectives into the classroom, offering students exposure to different linguistic and cultural contexts. This can be achieved through multimedia resources such as podcasts, videos, and articles created by speakers from various backgrounds. These authentic materials shift the focus from traditional, often Eurocentric narratives to a more inclusive representation of the world’s linguistic diversity.
Another important strategy is supporting adaptive learning. Technology can provide personalized learning experiences tailored to students' individual needs. This approach ensures all students, regardless of their linguistic background, receive the support they need to succeed. Adaptive learning technologies can adjust content and pacing based on student performance, bridging gaps in understanding and promoting a more equitable learning environment.
Additionally, technology can enable online collaboration and exchange, breaking down geographical barriers and fostering global connections. Through video conferencing, discussion forums, and collaborative projects, students can engage with peers from different cultural backgrounds. These interactions enhance cultural understanding and provide opportunities for authentic language use in meaningful contexts.
It is critical to address potential biases in technology and ensure ethical considerations in data privacy and usage. AI models, for example, can inadvertently perpetuate existing biases if trained on biased data. Therefore, it is essential to develop and implement technological tools designed with equity in mind. Educators must be vigilant in selecting and using technologies that promote inclusivity and fairness. Ensuring data privacy and obtaining informed consent from students are critical steps in maintaining trust and ethical standards.

Significance
This presentation highlights the need for intentional and ethical integration of technology in language teaching, ensuring that technological tools enhance education while supporting decolonization efforts in world language classrooms. Educators must use technology to support culturally responsive pedagogy and social justice education, creating a learning environment that empowers all students. This work contributes to the broader discourse on educational equity and the role of technology in fostering social justice in the classroom. Through thoughtful and ethical use of technology, educators can create more inclusive and representative curricula, validating and celebrating their students’ diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
