Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2F

Abstract

Understanding what students value in an instructor is crucial for fostering student success. This study explores the multidimensional nature of student perceptions of instructors, using a bottom-up approach to identify themes in student feedback. Data were collected from 1,388 students taught by 131 instructors across 22 higher education institutions. The Meaning Extraction Method (MEM) was employed to analyze open-ended responses, revealing four main themes and 17 sub-themes. Results indicate significant associations between student, instructor, and course characteristics and specific themes, providing insights into what students value in an instructor. Findings highlight the importance of clear communication, supportive practices, positive instructor-student interactions, and engaging teaching methods, which can inform student success initiatives by tailoring instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs.
