Culture in Novice Teachers’ Practices: A Pilot Study Comparing Residency and Traditional Teacher Preparation Programs

Abstract

This study compared an urban residency to a traditional teacher preparation program on the number and quality of culturally relevant teaching practices (CRTP) described by students on the Educational Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). Results of the study indicated that teacher candidates in both programs included similar numbers of CRTPs, but responses from students in the residency program related to K-12 students’ cultural lives more often than did responses from students in the traditional program.
