“It’s Tiring Being a Teacher That Cares”: Preservice Teachers, Masculinities, and Caring About Gender (In)Justices

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

In this paper we explore pre-service teachers who engaged with and experienced the work of caring about masculinities and gender (in)equity in education. At a time of growing professional development and increased demands on beginning teachers, we explore who does the work of caring about gender (in)justice, and how they do the work of caring. We consider how and when the hidden labour of caring about masculinities and gender inequity in education goes unnoticed and the obstacles to many who would otherwise engage in work around gender (in)justice. This paper speaks to the radical possibilities of caring about masculinities and gender (in)justice as well as the ways that gender may be reproduced through a social justice pedagogy among pre-service teachers.
