The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to explore how women in midlevel student affairs positions used developmental networks to overcome barriers to their advancement and develop their leader identity. The research questions explored how these women described their understanding of and experience with development networks, as well as how they intentionally built their developmental networks. This study was framed by a social process model of leader identity development. Participants were 16 women midlevel student affairs professionals at a large doctorate-granting institution. The findings indicated participants did not have a strong understanding of distinct types of developmental relationships. While some had intentionally sought out developmental relationships, others indicated they were uncomfortable seeking out these types of relationships.
