In this presentation, we consider the notions of repair and remedy as they might apply to the experiences and enduring consequences of school desegregation. We explore the findings of a longitudinal study on school desegregation efforts in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas amidst long-standing social and educational racial divides and resistance to Brown v. Board of Education (1954). We shed light on how community members experienced school desegregation efforts and on their aspirations for improving schooling experiences and societal participation as reparations that can build from school desegregation in the two Kansas Cities. We further consider our experiences as researchers who are engaged in qualitative research situated within shifting social notions of race and social justice.
