Abstract

Objectives
This paper aims to examine the inner workings of a California based Coalition. The Coalition is a collaborative effort brought forth by researchers, practitioners, and advocates committed to advancing teacher diversity, humanizing practices, and equity in schools. Their collective mission is to diversify the California educator workforce by amplifying and elevating evidence-based and equity-centered policy, practice, and research. By centering the collaborative and cooperative techniques of the Coalition, this presentation will illustrate how diverse and interdisciplinary communities can use emergent strategies to humanize any system including the teaching profession.

Perspective(s)
Emergent strategy emphasizes change through adaptive and iterative micro-interactions (Brown, 2017). In systems and organizations, emergent strategy unfolds as individuals make decisions, solve problems, and experiment within a shared purpose. These ongoing, often unplanned actions coalesce over time, forming a recognizable pattern that guides future endeavors. This iterative process allows for flexibility and adaptation in the face of unforeseen circumstances, making it a valuable tool for navigating complex environments.

Methods & Data
This qualitative case study analyzes the Coalition structure, collaborative processes, and key deliverables. Data sources include semi-structured interviews with members of the Coalition and observations and review of Coalition meetings.

Results & Considerations
Through emergent strategy, the Coalition’s collaborative structure fosters:
● Focus on Shared Values and Inclusivity: Emergent strategy emphasizes adaptability and iteration. Instead of a rigid predetermined plan, the Coalition starts with a shared vision for a more equitable and diverse K-12 education system. Through open communication and collaboration, common ground and specific goals can emerge organically, allowing diverse members to build a sense of unity despite different backgrounds or disciplines.

● Flexibility and Adaptability: Emergent strategy allows for flexibility to navigate unforeseen challenges and changing circumstances. The Coalition frequently adapts its strategies based on new data and emerging conditions, allowing for the inclusion of diverse perspectives and approaches. This fosters an environment where members from different disciplines feel their expertise is valued and can contribute to the overall direction.

● Decentralized Leadership and Shared Ownership: Emergent strategy promotes a more decentralized leadership style, where diverse voices and ideas are encouraged. This fosters a sense of shared ownership within the coalition, empowering members to contribute their unique skills and perspectives.

Significance
The dehumanization crisis in the teaching profession necessitates innovative solutions. The Coalition's model serves as a valuable case study for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking practical solutions. By showcasing the effectiveness of collaborative coalitional work, this study encourages similar efforts across educational contexts, ultimately fostering a more humanized and equitable professional landscape for educators.
