Abstract

Educational researchers have identified the importance of non-cognitive traits in promoting student engagement. This study examined the relationships between the dimensions of the triarchic model of grit (perseverance, consistency, adaptability), positive youth development (PYD) (competence, confidence, connection, character, caring), and school engagement (behavioral, emotional, cognitive), while controlling for socio-demographic covariates. Data were collected from 2,283 Filipino secondary students and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed that grit facets were indirectly related to behavioral engagement through competence and confidence, the links between grit and emotional and cognitive engagements were explained by connection and character. Perseverance and adaptability had a more positive impact on engagement than consistency. This provides further evidence of the nuanced relationships between grit, PYD, and school performance.
