Abstract

Framed within motivational climate theory, we examined motivational climate profiles among undergraduate students (N = 1417). Latent profile analyses were used to identify four motivational climate profiles: Moderate-low climate, moderate-high climate, low profile, and high climate. Profile membership did not differ based on gender, race or ethnicity, or disability status, however profiles differentially predicted motivational (expectancy for success, value, cost) and engagement (agentic, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive) outcomes. Generally, the low climate profile, characterized by the lowest levels of warmth and enthusiasm, learning goals, personal relevance, and competence support, and average levels of performance goals, was associated with less favorable outcomes than the other three groups (e.g., higher levels of cost, lower levels of engagement).
