The pandemic outbreak accelerated the use of the remote learning model across the U.S. between August 2020 and May 2021. This study examines the effect of online learning and broadband accessibility on academic performance. We leverage the fact that school districts had different use of remote (or hybrid) and in-person classes for the given period due to their different educational policy responses to COVID-19. Our results indicate school districts that have had remote or hybrid classes more than the state average are likely to have lower academic performance in math than those having online classes less than the average, but no meaningful difference in RLA scores. Also, the results imply that broadband accessibility is positively associated with academic achievement.
