A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study of Teaching in China Public Schools, United States Public Schools, and East Asian International Schools

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 703

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to examine selected United States and Chinese government teachers and to compare them to teachers in international schools in the East Asia region. These three contexts (U.S. government schools, China government schools, and East Asian independent schools) provide rich insight into the varied cultural and school contexts within which teachers work (see Figure 1). Specifically, we sought to answer the question: What are instructional practices of effective teachers teaching across varied cultural and school contexts? This proposal is based on an assimilation of multiple studies conducted from 2012 through 2023 that involved cross-case analyses of teachers identified as effective in their respective cultural and school contexts.
