Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand teachers’ online search and decision-making processes when planning for lessons addressing sensitive and controversial topics. Grounded in new literacies theory and using questionnaires and interviews with a think aloud task, 19 elementary, middle, and high school social studies teachers were recorded as they searched for materials to teach a sensitive or controversial history topic of their choice. Preliminary findings show how teachers navigate vast online repositories of curricular content, along with Generative Artificial Intelligence tools and for-profit platforms, to locate, create, evaluate, and select resources. We discuss the critical 21st century curricular literacies teachers employ and need to employ to support online planning in divisive and platform-driven times.
