Abstract

Interdisciplinary collaboration is a vital skill for statistics students as they will inevitably apply their training across disciplines. However, scant research considers the effectiveness of pedagogical approaches to teaching this content with an education theory framing. We consider how teaching interdisciplinary statistical collaboration through a community of practice is not only an effective pedagogical approach but also an important way to equip statistics students to make deep contributions across fields and help increase public trust in the research community. We address two questions: (1) What are key elements of one approach to teaching statistical collaboration that align with the theory of communities of practice? (2) To what extent does teaching interdisciplinary statistics in this way lead to effective statistical collaborations?
