Networks for Knowledge Brokers: A Typology of Support-Seeking Behaviors

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 610

Abstract

Knowledge brokers who operate outside traditional educational institutions are increasingly influential in education. This study aims to develop profiles of knowledge brokers based on their support-seeking behaviors (e.g., knowledge mobilization support, strategic advisory, networking support) and create a typology. Drawing on the theory of social capital, we analyzed egocentric social network survey and interview data from six equity-focused and evidence-based knowledge brokers and visualized different support-seeking behaviors. We identified five knowledge broker profiles: (a) balanced, (b) influential, (c) self-mobilizing, (d) learning, and (e) self-sufficient broker types. Based on the support received, these knowledge broker profiles can be mapped onto a typology across three dimensions: reach vs. constraint, growth vs. routine, and foundational support or not.
