Abstract

This study investigates how 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students define and exhibit leadership. Using a simulated-play leadership task, we explored students' perceptions and actions in leadership roles. Results indicate that students identify helpfulness, kindness, and rule-following as key leadership traits, aligning with coaching, affiliative, and compliance leadership styles. In simulated-play scenarios, approximately half of the students suggested specific strategies to motivate disengaged team members and inspire apprehensive peers, highlighting their problem-solving and empathetic skills. These findings underscore the importance of recognizing and nurturing leadership qualities and specific strategies, which could be integrated into effective leadership programs. These programs can cater to young students’ natural tendencies and support their growth as future leaders.
