Cultivating Environmental Connection Through Field Trips to Outdoor Learning Spaces (Poster 40)

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Aligned with the AERA 2025 conference theme of "Research, Remedy, and Repair: Toward Just Education Renewal," this paper explores how a specifically designed outdoor learning space promotes deeper learning and environmental connection for students, teachers, and parents during educational field trips. Concerns about children disconnecting from nature and declining youth well-being are addressed through observations of elementary school trips. Findings reveal active student engagement with the natural world, hands-on activities, and collaboration with educators and peers, fostering a sense of place and potentially increasing parental involvement. This research contributes practical insights for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders seeking positive educational renewal through outdoor learning spaces.
