Relationships as Revolutionary: Evaluating XQ’s Vision of Innovation at RISE High School

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 608

Abstract

In 2016, Da Vinci RISE High School was named an XQ Institute “Super School,” receiving a $10 million grant for their mission to teach homeless and foster care youth. Although they were just getting started, they were described as a model for innovative high schools across the country. XQ has continued to present RISE as a static image of success, emphasizing their hybrid and flexible schedule. For students and staff, however, relationships and resources are the core of the school, and there is a much more nuanced, challenging, and realistic story to tell about trying to serve some of Los Angeles’ most vulnerable and powerful students.
