Limited social positioning in academia impedes historically underrepresented doctoral students from experiencing socialization. Insights from various studies informed our model within a grant funded Alliance Program aimed at supporting underrepresented STEM doctoral candidates—specifically instructors at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—in completing their degrees. This alliance provides guidance and mentorship from faculty mentors, regional directors, research seminar leaders, summer institutes, and fellow cohort members. Socialization of ABD participants are explored quantitively and qualitatively. Findings from this study can be used to increase social support and enrich interpersonal experiences, ultimately fostering research autonomy, enhancing self-efficacy, nurturing self-determination, and facilitating success in academia.
