Unveiling the Multifaceted Identity of Black Student-Athletes: Implications for Coaching and Sport Leadership

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how disparity in diverse leadership and significant presence of Black student-athletes (BSA) in high-revenue sports impact the experiences of BSAs in higher education. Interviews with ten student-athletes from HBCUs and PWIs reveal key differences in how environment shapes experiences. Research found while both HBCUs and PWIs offer familial, aspirational, and resistance capital, BSAs at PWIs struggle more with authentic identity exploration due to societal pressures and overemphasis on athletic performance. The study highlights that PWI Black student-athletes frequently engage in impression management (Goffman, 1959), strategically presenting their identity to counter stereotypes, biases, and expectations. This research offers valuable insights for coaches and sport leaders on fostering inclusive and supportive environments for BSAs.
