Abstract

Using a nationally representative Korean longitudinal dataset, we examined the development of self-efficacy and achievement goal profiles during adolescence. The high self-efficacy and mastery goal profile, deemed the most adaptive, emerged in Grades 6 and 7, along with low all, moderate all, and high all profiles. However, it disappeared in Grades 9 and 11, at which low performance goal, moderate all, moderate-high all, and high all profiles emerged. Latent transition analysis revealed both stability and changes in profiles. Further investigations into predictors and outcomes of each profile revealed developmental differences in the predictive power of parental, teacher, and peer support. Notable differences in motivation, self-regulation, and achievement between high self-efficacy and mastery goal and high all profiles were also discovered.
