Resisting Curriculum Erasure: A Child Advocacy Project for Asian American Bilingual Picture Books

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 302

Abstract

This study aims to uplift Asian American voices in anti-racist education in early childhood settings. It recognizes how racism takes place in the form of curriculum erasure, starting from the early grades (Yoon & Templeton, 2022). Responding to the urgent need for counterstories of Asian American children, this child participatory action research project follows a group of 20 bilingual children from a Vietnamese-English dual language classroom. It aims to document how these children, under the guidance and support of their teachers, initiated and took action in their advocacy project to resist curriculum erasure and advocate for the inclusion of Asian American bilingual picture books in their school community.
