Abstract

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in anti-Asian violence across the country. As a result, more researchers are calling for accurate and positive representation of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) at schools. In 2022, New Jersey (NJ) became the second state after Illinois to mandate school districts to include AAPI history and contributions in the K-12 Social Studies curriculum. This qualitative case-study aims to gather information concerning the AAPI-inclusive curriculum mandate in NJ using individual interviews and lesson observations of teachers in one K-12 school district. Policy implications and recommendations for educators and advocates of AAPI are discussed.
