Revisiting the Associations Among Expectancy, Value, and Cost: A Network Analysis Across Grades and Subjects (Poster 29)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Instead of traditional linear models and person-centered approaches employed in previous studies, this study introduced a network analysis to depict the potentially intricate and dense patterns among expectancy, three types of task values, and four types of cost within the framework of situated expectancy-value theory. We also conducted network comparisons across grades 6 to 8 and across the domains of math and English. Six networks were constructed, revealing that attainment value and emotional cost were relatively more influential components within these networks. Several strong connections were observed across different networks. Furthermore, based on the results of the invariance test of network strength and structure, we found that expectancy, value, and cost networks varied by grade and were domain-specific.
