Abstract

This study examined how Chinese adolescents' participation in group discussions changed over time. Participants were 29 seventh-graders from four discussion groups, with 7-8 students in each group, at a rural middle school in China. Each group had seven discussions, and the total video duration was 765.9 minutes. The discussions were analyzed moment by moment to capture students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive interactions, resulting in 5,702 codes. The findings from the Epistemic Network Analysis showed a shift from emotional and behavioral interactions in the early stage to a focus on cognitive interactions in the later stage, suggesting that students could establish a shared understanding to construct knowledge through social regulations. This study offers new insights into the processes of collaborative learning.
