The Application of ChatGPT Across Educational Levels: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Given the rapid emergence and development, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) may play a critical role in education. One of the most representative GAIs, ChatGPT, has gained widespread attention and application from researchers and educators. This study aims to explore the general use of ChatGPT in education across different educational levels and focus on the difference between K-12 and higher education. It also discusses the effectiveness of ChatGPT use in education. This systematic review of 116 publications found that ChatGPT had positive effects in most studies. In addition, more than half of the reviewed studies applied ChatGPT in higher education. Findings mapped the distribution of ChatGPT’s use in education, which could guide educators and researchers in using this technology.
