Developing a Researcher Stance: Navigating Axiological, Epistemological, Methodological, and Ontological Commitments

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This proposal describes and explores the elements of developing a researcher stance. Using a novel visual image, this presentation illustrates the concepts of methodology, epistemology, ontology, and axiology. Exploring these concepts in clear and meaningful ways, this proposal focuses on a crucial and often-overlooked aspect of scholarship—developing a unified and cohesive researcher stance. This work is intended as a helpful start for doctoral students and early-career researchers, a useful assist to those who teach or mentor doctoral students and/or early-career researchers, and a possible point of reexamination to those farther along in their academic careers who may wish to revisit the roots of their early decisions and alignments.
