Abstract

This study is part of a larger youth participatory action research (YPAR) initiative involving about 50 students around Ohio aimed at reducing barriers to school attendance. The purpose is to understand predictors of absenteeism in post-pandemic high schools. Analyses of nearly 3,000 survey responses the team collected from students statewide found that students of color, students with disabilities, low-SES students, and students who have to travel long distances to school and take public transportation miss school more often; and when students are engaged in classes that match their learning styles and in the broader school community they are less often absent. Our YPAR team is pursuing change through an ongoing series of meetings with stakeholders and decision-makers around Ohio.
