Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3A

Abstract

This systematic review examines 196 peer-reviewed articles on Latinx participation in STEM fields, identifying key themes, interventions, and findings. Eight overarching categories emerged, including the role of supportive figures, effects of ethnicity/gender/language, nurturing Latinx identities, empowering interventions, challenges and opportunities, faculty perspectives, recruitment/retention, and Miscellaneous Factors. The review reveals a complex landscape of barriers and facilitators affecting Latinx STEM engagement. The review showed while numerous studies examine challenges, fewer evaluate targeted interventions. Findings highlight the importance of culturally relevant pedagogy, mentorship, family engagement, and institutional support in fostering Latinx STEM success. This paper synthesizes current knowledge and proposes actionable recommendations for educators, institutions, and policymakers to promote equity and inclusion in STEM education and careers for Latinx individuals.
