Analyzing Newcomer Narratives in a Student-Produced Video on Integration Challenges

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This study sought to empower the perspectives of racial minority adolescent students by creating an opportunity to advocate for themselves and to seek change in a highly diverse rural high school in Western Canada. The study focuses on a student-produced short film created for a social media campaign that depicted the issues and challenges of a racialized Muslim student, highlighting matters of belonging and the importance of religious and racial literacy. Utilizing Rose’s (2023) four sites for interpreting visual materials as well as Pearce and Wood’s (2016) evaluative framework for student voice initiatives, the scholarship represents a transformational experience, encouraging student participants and administration to heighten awareness and understanding of self-advocacy in authentic discussions.
