Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between college counseling support and the college enrollment selectivity of first-generation college (FGC) students. It highlights the enhanced returns on investment for attending highly selective institutions, which can offer improved lifetime earnings and opportunities. FGC students are underrepresented in these institutions due to a lack of knowledge and connections. This research utilizes data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) to analyze the impact of high school counseling on college enrollment outcomes. The results indicate significant disparities, with FGCs less likely to enroll in selective institutions. However, access to dedicated college counseling increases the likelihood of FGCs enrolling in selective colleges. The study underscores the importance of robust college counseling in high schools.
