Translating Cultural Humility Into Practice in the Field of Mixed Methods Research

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 110

Abstract

The field of mixed methods is founded on the idea that research can combine different perspectives, approaches, methods, and rhetoric to achieve meaningful insights. Mixed methods researchers celebrate this diversity, but it also presents challenges. Cultural humility may address this challenge, but examples of translating cultural humility into mixed methods practice are lacking. We offer guidance for applying cultural humility within four areas: (a) teaching mixed methods research, (b) mentoring researchers using mixed methods, (c) working with mixed methods teams, and (d) reviewing mixed methods manuscripts and proposals. By practicing cultural humility, members of the mixed methods field can better engage with, welcome, support, and include individuals who bring diverse perspectives and approaches for thinking about and doing mixed methods.
