Abstract

Research-Practice Partnerships (RPPs) aim to bridge research and school realities by creating mutually beneficial relationships between researchers and educational practitioners. A unique RPP operating in the only statewide school district in the U.S. is the Hawai‘i Educational Research Network (HERN). This study explores how HERN affects collaboration, educational improvement, and systems change in the Hawai‘i Department of Education, focusing on its unique facets—(1) the pairing of a statewide DOE and a state university and (2) its tripartite composition model of DOE staff, university faculty, and graduate student/s. Through interviews, this study reveals that the experiences of the partners in HERN’s tripartite model supported capacity building in various aspects and fostered educational improvement among themselves and with their institutions.
