Abstract

This paper shares research on teacher leadership and a social network mapping tool developed to understand the lives of teachers. Using a feminist teacher leadership framework and social network analysis, we explored how constructing social network maps (SNMs) supported teacher leadership initiatives and enabled teacher leaders to analyze available social capital and break down hierarchies of power. While the SNM tool illuminated stakeholders, participants were unclear about how to use their SNM to analyze their use of social capital. Our research suggests the need for targeted professional development that supports teachers in using this tool to leverage their social capital and expand their spheres of influence as they plan and implement their teacher leadership initiatives and promote educational renewal.
