Abstract

This research aimed to explore the relationship between Chinese individuals’ social class and meritocratic beliefs in the case of master's admissions at American elite universities. Using in-depth interviews with 33 Chinese international students enrolled in master's programs at elite U.S. universities, this research explored their perceptions of meritocracy and legitimacy of the admissions system. Findings indicated that most participants viewed the elite admissions system as legitimate, despite acknowledging educational inequality and critiquing meritocracy. To address this contradiction, the study investigated the strategies used by participants to reconcile their support for the admissions system with their critiques of educational inequality and meritocratic principles. This research contributes to a cross-cultural understanding of how elite education maintains legitimacy and reinforces educational inequality.
