Reflections of Teacher Candidates: An Analysis of Reflective Writing (Poster 9)

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This presentation reports on a study that explored the integration of reflective practice and case studies in teacher education to enhance teacher candidates' (TCs) resilience and professional growth. In an initial certification course, TCs engaged with case studies highlighting common challenges and wrote reflective responses. Analysis revealed that TCs predominantly described scenarios rather than applying theoretical concepts. Despite the intent to foster deep reflection, TCs struggled to connect theory with practice. Findings suggest the need for better curricular designs that seamlessly integrate theory and practice, more structured reflective exercises, and ongoing support to develop reflective skills. This approach aims to better prepare TCs for navigating real-world teaching problems, ultimately improving teacher retention.
