Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, offers the potential to enhance student engagement in Self-regulated learning (SRL).SRL, a self-directed process driven by psychological needs explicated through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT),is intricately intertwined with students' epistemology. This study aims at investigating the interplay between needs satisfaction, personal epistemology, and students' SRL behaviors in the context of GENAI. The finding reveals that students' fulfillment of prerequisite needs, such as perceived critical thinking and autonomy, has positive impact for their involvement in SRL. Furthermore, this process is mediated by students' epistemology regarding AI ethics and social good. These findings have implications for the development of a human-centered GENAI-supported learning environment and corresponding teaching strategies.
