Due to the nature of Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum, it is impossible to separate the learning done in the classroom from the lived experiences of the students we teach. The connection between learning and life makes FCS courses so important for students, but FCS teachers must be prepared to support students when learning gets personal. One way FCS teachers can be proactive in providing care and support for their students is by integrating three essential elements of Engaged Pedagogy. This study examines how pre-service FCS Education majors understand, observe, and make sense of Engaged Pedagogy during their FCS Methods courses, and the qualitative analysis of the data gathered shows that Engaged Pedagogy provides practices valuable to FCS teachers.
